What Are the Two Eucharistic Miracles That Took Place in Lanciano, Italy? (Part Two)

God our Father longs to increase our faith in His Son's Eucharistic Presence still here on earth. There are many miracles of the Eucharist in Church history. One such miracle took place in Lanciano, Italy. This town's history is closely related to the crucifixion of Jesus.

In 700 A.D., a Basilian monk was facing a crisis in his vocation because he did not believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. He continued to celebrate the Mass according to sacred tradition, but a profound doubt was growing within him especially at the moment of Consecration. He was filled with guilt as he raised the host and said the sacred prayers. He often prayed hard to be released from his doubt so his vocation could be saved.

One morning he was being especially challenged with a strong attack of doubt in the Real Presence. Moments before the prayers of Consecration, he eagerly begged God to take away this terrible doubt. He then prayed the prayers of Consecration and lifted the host. Before his eyes he was stunned by what he saw. His hands began to tremble and his body began to shake in response to the miracle he was witnessing! He turned slowly with the consecrated host in his hands and faced the congregation. He said, "O fortunate witnesses to whom the Blessed God, to confound my disbelief, has wished to reveal Himself visible to our eyes. Come, brethren, and marvel at our God so close to us. Behold the Flesh and Blood of our most beloved Christ."

After he spoke these words the church was filled with cries and wailing. The congregation was looking at the host held by the Bascilian monk. They saw it had become real flesh! The wine had become real blood! Shouts for mercy, pleas for forgiveness, and tears of heartfelt prayers were raised to the heavens at this sight.

The miracle continues to this day in Lanciano, Italy because the host and blood has never disintegrated! Scientific testing has been done on the host, the most recent in 1970, only to find:

  • The flesh is real flesh and the blood is real blood
  • The flesh consists of muscular tissue of the heart (myocardium)
  • The flesh and blood belong to the human species
  • The blood proteins are in the same normal proportions as found in fresh, normal blood
  • The blood and flesh are in the same blood type, AB
  • The preservation of the flesh and blood which were left in their natural state for 12 centuries, remain unchanged
