Bartimeaus' Personal Encounter with Jesus

Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see." Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you." Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way. [Gospel of Mark 10: 51-52]

Often in life we have personal challenges. How we choose to deal with them can determine a certain pathway we choose to live our lives. Take for instance our blind friend in this scripture passage. If you were to read the entire passage you would find out his name is Bartimeaus. You would hear that he was sitting by the roadside begging. I am sure he sat there daily to try and deal with his own personal challenge. But this day, when Jesus enters into his life, he does something differently.

Some will say that Bartimeaus came to know about Jesus through the stories people were telling of Jesus' 'words and deeds'. What I find interesting is that he could have continued to sit by the roadside and allowed Jesus to just pass by. However, now that Bartimeaus has the opportunity to personally encounter Jesus, he begins to cry out, "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me."

As you read in the scripture Jesus ends up healing him. Because of this personal encounter Bartimeaus immediately follows Jesus on 'the way'. Jesus says to us "Come, follow me" so that he becomes our teacher and we become his disciples. So that he can sanctify our lives and we can be transformed by his presence. He desires us to follow Him so we in turn will share His message with others. Did you know that 'Come and Follow Me' was the mission statement of our parish? Let us continue to open our hearts to Christ so that we allow him to transform our lives and follow Him on 'The Way'.

What will be your prayer this week that you bring to Jesus which will allow you to have a personal encounter?
