“Behold I am with you always, even to the close of the age.”
Jesus promised that He would never abandon His people; He promised that He would remain until the end of time. Jesus walked the earth over 2000 years ago, yet He is still present and active in the lives of His people. He is with them. However, recognizing God’s presence in our world today takes a ‘trained eye’ and an act of faith. Jesus can most readily be recognized through the witness of Christian people, people who acknowledge and testify to the power and presence of God in their lives. The ‘Encounter with Christ’ stories help to highlight how God is working in the lives of the people in the parish of St. Magdalen’s Church. These stories are meant to help those who read them to more easily recognize God’s presence in their own lives. God wants to be known by you and to work in your life—invite Him to do so.
Since my birth, I have seen the hand of Our Creator and the intercession of Our Most Holy Mother over me. I am Yamiris Marcano, born and raised in Puerto Rico. When my mother was seven months pregnant with me, she had complications of such a magnitude that they believed neither she nor I would survive. My aunt was a “Mission Helpers of The Sacred Helpers” nun. She, along with her congregation of nuns, came to the hospital and prayed with great fervor. They prayed for days to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, holding scapulars in their hands. God listened to their pleas and my mother and I survived. The nuns decided to give us that statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel along with their Scapulars. For this reason, I always have scapulars with me and give them to anyone who wants them.
When my parents baptized me they decided that my middle name was going to be “Del Carmen”. So since I was little I grew up praying to God and the Virgin Mary daily; entrusting myself to both. I grew up in a Catholic Family and I studied in a Catholic School. I used to spend time with nuns and visit convents. My grandmother, a woman with great faith, would bring me in front of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and an image of the Virgin Mary so we could pray and speak to them.Because of this, I have always seen Jesus as my Savior and my friend. Through any difficulty or problem that my family encountered, we would appeal to God first. I can look back now and see all the times I have fallen and tripped and yet how Jesus lifted me up through them.
I was joined in the Sacrament of Matrimony to my husband Arturo Colom 22 years ago and God has blessed us with two children; Ivan and Loreniz. About 8 years ago, because of my husband’s work, our whole family moved from our country of Puerto Rico to New Jersey. It was a very difficult change for us, but we put it in the hands of God and He brought us to this wonderful community of St. Magdalen de Pazzi in which we were all well received. However, in the solitude that we experienced here, I started to look for God more, even more than I ever had before. In Puerto Rico I had never been exposed to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, so I didn’t know anything about it. However, it intrigued me. Even though I did not know what to do or how to pray, I started going to the chapel. One day I received a call from my grandmother back home. The next day she passed away. I had a very strong pain in my heart and the only thing that I could think to do was run to the Most Blessed Sacrament. I spoke to Jesus just as I would talk to my Dad. I can really say that I started to feel how God, my Father hugged and consoled me. I started to find an impressive peace and tranquility that I have no words to describe. I think it was like a small piece of Heaven, our real home. At the same time, I realized that what I needed to do is pray for the soul of my grandmother so that she could soon see the face of God. It was in that moment where I experienced the real presence of God in the Blessed Sacrament and how His merciful love wraps and overwhelms you. With the Blessed Sacrament, your love for God becomes more intimate and your faith is strengthened. It is magnificent to be in the presence of God and I became a committed adorer of the Blessed Sacrament. I love going to adoration and bringing my husband and kids with me. I feel a constant desire to know more and more about God.BACK TO LIST
