What Does it Mean to Follow Jesus?

If someone was to ask you, "What does it mean for you to follow Jesus?", what would be your response? Might you find it confusing or unfamiliar? Or maybe you are someone who could answer the question. Maybe you are like our friend Bartimeaus in last weeks 'Come Follow Me' reflection who had an encounter with Jesus and now has a great desire to follow him on 'the way'. Most of us may be a little unsure how to respond or even really know what the question is trying to ask of us.

Mary Healy in her book, The Gospel of Mark, Catholic Commentary, states that "to be a follower of Jesus is to share intimately in his life". I have found in order to intimately share in someone's life means having a deep meaningful relationship. Isn't this what God truly desires for each of us? God's mission of being physical present to us in Jesus was to show us his redemptive love through the 'Good News' that Jesus proclaimed. It was through a relationship with Jesus that his disciples came to know the love of our Father, "Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you" (Jn 17: 25). We are being called by Jesus to do the same.

Can you imagine if this Monday morning you are at work and all of a sudden a man comes up to you says he is Jesus and said, "Come, follow me" (Matt 4:19) as he did with Peter and Andrew. How would you respond? Years ago I might of said something like, "Have a seat, I will be with you in a moment." Then dial the phone for security. But today, I think much like Peter and Andrew, my heart is open to hearing the voice of Jesus because I do desire to hear the 'Good News' that he is proclaiming in my life.

Reflection

Maybe there is something on your heart you could allowJesus to discuss with you. Take time to reflect on PopeFrancis' words as he speaks about encountering Jesus,"The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk;whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realizethat he is already there, waiting for us with openarms." (EG:3)
