The Samaritan Woman's Personal Encounter with Jesus

A few words from Pope Francis…. Jesus' whole life, his way of dealing with the poor, his actions, his integrity, his simple daily acts of generosity, and finally his complete self-giving, is precious and reveals the mystery of his divine life. Whenever we encounter this anew, we become convinced that it is exactly what others need, even though they may not recognize it: "What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you" (Acts 17:23) (Joy of the Gospel. Art.265).

In last week's reflection we heard author Mary Healy state that "to be a follower of Jesus is to share intimately in his life." As we develop this intimate relationship with Jesus [personal prayer, Holy Mass, sacrament of reconciliation, small faith groups, acts of stewardship] we begin to have these personal encounters that have transformative effects on our lives. It is within these encounters that Jesus reveals the mystery of God's divine life and love for us.

Reflect for a moment on the scripture passage about the Samaritan woman at the well. When you read the scripture story (John 4:1-42) you can experience the encounter and transformation that happens in her life. This encounter transformed her heart and she shared with others what she had experienced. Her personal witness drew others closer to Jesus.

As she speaks with Jesus he redirects her heart to 'the living water' and says "whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst". She responds, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty." She then goes back into town and "many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman whotestified."

Reflection

Her story is still present today in our daily lives. We carry our own personal burdens, thirsting for truth in our lives. Take time this week in prayer to meet Jesus at the well so he may transform your heart.
