In his book, 21 Ways to Worship: A Guide to Eucharistic Adoration, Vinny Flynn addresses the question of falling asleep while praying and adoring Our Eucharistic Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament in adoration. He reminds us that God is a Perfect Father who loves us unconditionally and constantly. If we desire to be before Our Lord in adoration but fall into sleep, Our Loving Father would not be upset or angry with us. He will continue to pour His graces into our resting heart.
If you are afraid you will breathe very heavily or even snore and might disturb other adorers, you may want to let them know it is ok for them to tap you gently awake if you fall into sleep. Flynn reminds us to be human with God and others. In our humanness, we sometimes are so tired that the peace of Our Eucharistic Lord lulls us into one of the most restful, restorative naps we could ever take!
Flynn tells us that if we find ourselves constantly sleeping when we go to adoration, we may want to find another hour so "for at least some of the time, we can be attentive and consciously present to the One who is present" for us. Another suggestion would be to shorten our visit until we are able to be attentive during a full Holy Hour of prayer. So, come to Him all you who are weary…He loves you very much and welcomes you just as you are…awake or asleep!BACK TO LIST
